Description:

We’re hiring a Public Transport Inspector to oversee fare compliance and ensure respectful conduct aboard city transit — ideal for someone who’s fair, observant, and confident in direct communication. You’ll monitor late-night bus, tram, and metro services to ensure schedules are followed, stops are respected, and passengers feel safe. You’ll be trained to use handheld scanners, validation apps, or visual checks to confirm passenger payment status quickly and discreetly. You’ll assist in checking lighting, signage, and platform systems to confirm visibility and functionality during low-light hours. You’ll issue citations or warnings for fare evasion based on department protocol, always with clear documentation. You’ll use diagnostic tools, hand instruments, and visual assessments to record detailed vehicle condition reports. You’ll assist in testing equipment such as ramps, lift systems, heating/AC, and wheelchair securement mechanisms. You’ll help passengers understand how to purchase tickets, recharge travel cards, or file complaints or questions if needed. You’ll document any violations of metro regulations, such as fare evasion, disorderly conduct, or platform trespassing.

Basic Qualifications:

• Check tickets and passes, verifying passenger compliance with fare regulations.
• Stay informed about updates to public transit policies, fare structures, or route adjustments.
• Use handheld devices or apps to verify digital tickets or log inspection data accurately.
• Ensure accessibility standards are met for passengers with disabilities or mobility needs.
• Adapt quickly to changing environments, route changes, or emergency situations.

Preferred:

• Familiar with uniforms, ID badges, and professional appearance requirements when representing the agency.
• Pays attention to detail when checking accessibility features and compliance with disability support standards.
• Able to interpret schedules, maps, and service zones to verify route accuracy and stop coverage.
• Pays close attention to schedule adherence, cleanliness, safety compliance, and rider conduct.
• Capable of resolving disputes calmly and de-escalating tense situations between passengers or staff.

You’ll document nighttime activity, incident logs, and inspection summaries with detail and accuracy. You’ll support customer service by answering rider questions, providing directions, or distributing service update materials during inspections. You’ll rotate through depots, garages, and yards during early morning or overnight hours to complete pre-shift inspections. You’ll work in all types of weather and interact with a wide range of passengers, from commuters to tourists to schoolchildren. You’ll wear issued gear and maintain a sharp, respectful appearance as a visible part of the metro operations team. You’ll contribute to monthly audits, reports, and internal reviews that help improve city-wide transport quality.
