Description:
We’re hiring a Public Utility Worker to help keep city infrastructure clean, safe, and operational — perfect for someone who values hands-on work and community service. You’ll assist with mowing lawns, trimming bushes, and edging pathways to maintain a neat and welcoming appearance in parks and recreation areas. You’ll assist with removing litter, sweeping sidewalks, and emptying trash bins in public areas on a set schedule. You’ll be trained to operate tools like valve keys, hydrant wrenches, pressure gauges, and inspection cameras. You’ll be trained to use small equipment like leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers, and push mowers safely. You’ll assist in painting public fixtures, cleaning signs, and maintaining bus stops, benches, and fountains. You’ll help identify and report hazards such as broken sidewalks, graffiti, or blocked drains to your supervisor or relevant departments. You’ll support scheduled shut-offs or reconnections for water service and notify affected residents when necessary. You’ll rotate through landmark zones such as waterfront rails, civic monuments, observation points, or viewing decks.
Basic Qualifications:
- Inspect utility systems regularly to identify wear, leaks, or potential hazards.
- Track and document maintenance activities, time logs, and material usage accurately.
- Adapt to changing weather conditions, urgent calls, or rotating shifts without compromising safety.
- Provide excellent service to residents or businesses affected by outages, repairs, or inspections.
- Operate and maintain equipment like jackhammers, pumps, or utility trucks in a safe and efficient manner.
Preferred:
- Comfortable lifting, digging, shoveling, and using hand or power tools for extended periods.
- Willing to support cleanup operations after storms, roadwork, or public gatherings.
- Capable of inspecting and maintaining public infrastructure like storm drains, hydrants, water lines, or park facilities.
- Pays attention to the condition of city property and reports any hazards, damage, or repair needs.
- Able to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, or on-call shifts depending on public service needs.
Benefits:
- You’ll make a tangible impact — keeping the lights on, water flowing, and gas available is a critical service.
- Recognition for your hard work — public utility workers are essential, and your contributions don’t go unnoticed.
- A sense of purpose — every day, you help improve the quality of life for your community.
- Safety is a priority — we provide the tools, training, and support to ensure you’re always working in a safe environment.
- Work that’s both challenging and rewarding — you’ll solve problems and make a direct difference every day.
You’ll help set up and tear down public events by moving barricades, signage, or tents in coordination with city teams. You’ll be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions and sometimes assist during weekends or overnight outages. You’ll follow safety procedures while using hand tools, ladders, and equipment in wet, hot, or dusty conditions. You’ll be expected to work outdoors in various conditions, including heat, cold, and rain, with regular physical activity. You’ll receive guidance from senior staff and ongoing training in city procedures, equipment use, and safety practices. You’ll help track tasks completed, materials used, and areas serviced each day on digital or paper logs. No experience is required — just responsibility, physical readiness, and a strong desire to serve your community directly. This role is perfect for someone interested in essential work, municipal careers, or skilled utility operations. If you’re ready to work below the surface to keep your city flowing, we’re ready to train you from the ground up.
