Description:

We’re hiring a Public Utility Worker to help keep city infrastructure clean, safe, and operational — perfect for someone who values hands-on work and community service. You’ll begin by assisting licensed utility technicians in inspecting water mains, sewer lines, valves, and hydrants throughout the city. You’ll be trained to operate landscaping equipment such as push mowers, string trimmers, blowers, and ride-on units. You’ll help plant flowers, trees, and shrubs during seasonal projects, following planting plans and soil care standards. You’ll help inspect fountains and decorative lighting systems, reporting clogs, cracks, or malfunctions to technicians. You’ll assist in painting public fixtures, cleaning signs, and maintaining bus stops, benches, and fountains. You’ll help prep event spaces, install signage or barricades, and support public gatherings by setting up benches, bins, or barriers. You’ll assist in maintaining planter beds, edging grass near walkways, and watering trees or greenery throughout the space. You’ll assist with basic facility maintenance such as restroom cleaning, minor repairs, and restocking supplies in public buildings.

Basic Qualifications:

• Be physically prepared for demanding outdoor labor including lifting, digging, and climbing.
• Operate and maintain equipment like jackhammers, pumps, or utility trucks in a safe and efficient manner.
• Work independently or in crews to complete assignments efficiently and professionally.
• Support seasonal operations such as snow removal, street sweeping, or leaf collection when required.
• Read utility maps, blueprints, or schematics to locate underground lines and plan repairs.

Preferred:

• Willing to assist with emergency repairs, public events setup, or seasonal work like snow removal or landscaping.
• Can interact respectfully with the public and answer basic questions about work being done.
• Familiar with basic tools and equipment used for street, sewer, water, or facility maintenance tasks.
• Organized in completing daily work orders, time logs, and material usage reports accurately.
• Follows directions from supervisors and reads site plans, blueprints, or instructions for job assignments.

You’ll support leaf collection, snow removal, and other seasonal tasks depending on weather and park needs. You’ll be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions and sometimes assist during weekends or overnight outages. You’ll be expected to stay alert, work steadily in the dark, and report any hazards that arise mid-task. You’ll be mentored by experienced utility operators who will help you develop long-term trade skills on the job.
