Description:

We’re hiring a Public Utility Worker to help maintain city parks and green spaces — perfect for someone who enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in keeping public areas clean and beautiful. You’ll begin by assisting licensed utility technicians in inspecting water mains, sewer lines, valves, and hydrants throughout the city. You’ll be trained to operate pressure washers, surface sweepers, and water pumps to keep hardscapes spotless and safe. You’ll help maintain green spaces by trimming grass, watering plants, clearing brush, and spreading mulch as needed. You’ll assist with locating leaks, identifying blockages, and helping repair cracked pipes, joints, or manhole covers. You’ll help flush hydrants, clean storm drains, and clear catch basins to ensure proper flow during heavy rain. You’ll learn how to document service activity, collect water samples, and report pressure or quality issues accurately. You’ll support scheduled shut-offs or reconnections for water service and notify affected residents when necessary. You’ll rotate through landmark zones such as waterfront rails, civic monuments, observation points, or viewing decks.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Take pride in maintaining the essential systems that keep communities running every day.
  • Coordinate with other departments, contractors, or emergency personnel as needed on job sites.
  • Follow safety protocols, wear protective gear, and comply with local regulations during all fieldwork.
  • Report hazards, vandalism, or equipment malfunctions promptly for timely response.
  • Ensure work zones are marked properly with signs, cones, or barriers to protect workers and the public.

Preferred:

  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and performing physically demanding tasks.
  • Background or interest in utilities, public works, construction, landscaping, or facility services.
  • Able to operate vehicles such as utility trucks, sweepers, or light construction equipment safely and effectively.
  • Wants to grow into roles like Crew Leader, Equipment Operator, or Utility Supervisor.
  • Can interact respectfully with the public and answer basic questions about work being done.

Benefits:

  • Stable pay and bonuses — we reward hard work and dedication to maintaining reliable services.
  • Access to employee discounts — on services and products that support your personal and professional life.
  • A role that makes a real difference — you’ll be part of something that directly impacts people's lives.
  • Supportive team environment — you’ll work with colleagues who respect your contributions and expertise.
  • You’ll make a tangible impact — keeping the lights on, water flowing, and gas available is a critical service.

You’ll support leaf collection, snow removal, and other seasonal tasks depending on weather and park needs. You’ll be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions and sometimes assist during weekends or overnight outages. You’ll work as part of a small crew where communication, reliability, and pride in your work are key. You’ll gain experience in both reactive and planned utility work, supporting clean water access and public sanitation. You’ll rotate between multiple parks and green spaces in your district to keep each area consistent and well-maintained. You’ll help track tasks completed, materials used, and areas serviced each day on digital or paper logs. No prior experience is required — just dependability, physical energy, and a love for keeping nature accessible to all. This role is great for someone who values calm, rhythm, and helping create a clean space people can enjoy every day. If you’re ready to work below the surface to keep your city flowing, we’re ready to train you from the ground up.
