Description:

We’re hiring a Librarian Trainee to support our children’s library team — ideal for someone who enjoys books, creativity, and working with kids in a welcoming environment. You’ll begin by learning how to handle fragile documents, photographs, and rare books using proper gloves and tools. You’ll assist in checking books in and out, updating patron records, and issuing library cards at the front desk. You’ll help patrons browse materials, check out books, and register for library cards right on the spot. You’ll be trained to create colorful displays and book-themed bulletin boards that make the space inviting and engaging. You’ll support inventory and shelf maintenance, making sure materials are correctly shelved, clean, and easy to find. You’ll assist elderly or mobility-limited patrons in selecting books, placing holds, or accessing large-print and audio materials. You’ll assist in logging children’s reading progress during seasonal programs like summer reading challenges. You’ll help create finding aids, tags, and descriptions to make archives easier to search and access.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Track metrics like visitor stats, program attendance, or material circulation for reporting.
  • Manage circulation activities such as checkouts, returns, renewals, and late fees.
  • Implement policies to ensure respectful use of materials, computers, and library spaces.
  • Adapt to different roles—teacher, tech support, researcher, or event host—throughout the day.
  • Take pride in making the library not just a place for books, but a hub for lifelong learning.

Preferred:

  • Degree in library science, information science, or a related field with knowledge of cataloging systems.
  • Familiar with library catalog software (e.g., Koha, Aleph, Sierra) and digital databases.
  • Experience managing physical and digital collections, including acquisition, classification, and circulation of materials.
  • Comfortable supervising quiet study areas, assisting with printers/computers, or managing room bookings.
  • Capable of balancing desk duties with behind-the-scenes collection management and programming.

Benefits:

  • You’ll never be told your passion for books is “too much.”
  • Work with fellow knowledge-lovers — people who care, read, and actually listen.
  • Flexible hours that respect your brain’s rhythm — early bird or afternoon owl, we’ve got shifts.
  • Modern tools and software — no, it’s not all card catalogs anymore.
  • No loud meetings, no chaotic rush — just steady, meaningful impact.

You’ll help maintain toys, learning tools, and interactive areas, making sure everything is clean and safe for use. You’ll assist with outreach by distributing flyers, answering questions, and introducing new patrons to library services. You’ll learn how to gently redirect noisy behavior and support a calm but fun environment. You’ll participate in shift transitions, helping maintain accurate records and reports on resource usage. You’ll work alongside librarians, IT staff, and student services to provide well-rounded academic support. You’ll receive guidance and feedback from professional librarians who’ll help you grow in accuracy, patience, and knowledge. This internship is great for anyone interested in education, child development, or early literacy outreach. This internship is great for someone interested in community service, education, or mobile outreach programs. If you’re ready to help people find what they’re looking for — and maybe discover something unexpected — we’re ready to train you at the library.
