Description:

We’re hiring a Librarian Trainee to assist in the archives department — ideal for someone who appreciates history, structure, and preserving valuable information for future generations. You’ll begin by learning how to organize and shelve children’s books, picture books, chapter books, and early readers by category and age group. You’ll assist with checking out materials, helping parents find age-appropriate books, and recommending popular titles to young readers. You’ll help set up and clean up after storytime sessions, puppet shows, or activity hours in the kids’ zone. You’ll be trained to create colorful displays and book-themed bulletin boards that make the space inviting and engaging. You’ll support arts-and-crafts activities, helping distribute supplies, supervise table work, and encourage kids to participate. You’ll assist elderly or mobility-limited patrons in selecting books, placing holds, or accessing large-print and audio materials. You’ll learn how to restock the vehicle based on community interest and monitor what gets borrowed at each location. You’ll gain experience preparing library workshops on research skills, plagiarism avoidance, or citation management.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Promote library services both in person and online to broaden community engagement.
  • Maintain organized shelves and signage to help users navigate independently.
  • Assist with interlibrary loans and special orders to expand access for patrons.
  • Plan and host educational programs, reading groups, or community events for all age groups.
  • Keep current with publishing trends, reference tools, and emerging technologies in information science.

Preferred:

  • Able to assist patrons with research, book searches, and accessing online resources or archives.
  • Can support catalog digitization projects, data entry, or archival preservation when needed.
  • Keeps up with trends in literacy, e-books, and modern information services.
  • Comfortable conducting library orientations, workshops, or literacy programs for diverse age groups.
  • Pays attention to metadata accuracy, Dewey Decimal Classification, or Library of Congress standards.

Benefits:

  • Surround yourself with stories, ideas, and knowledge — every shelf has something new.
  • We celebrate curiosity — if you love learning, you’ll fit right in.
  • Opportunities for professional development — webinars, courses, and conferences.
  • Paid time to research, curate collections, and plan thoughtful programs.
  • Stable, public-serving role with real community value.

You’ll gain exposure to both analog and digital preservation — from microfilm to cloud-based storage systems. You’ll receive training in information confidentiality and how to support students who may be struggling academically or personally. You’ll be mentored on how to work with accuracy, patience, and integrity when managing irreplaceable collections. You’ll help prepare take-home kits, bookmarks, and printable worksheets tied to library themes or school partnerships. You’ll assist in reshelving returned books and keeping the library neat and welcoming throughout your shift. You’ll receive guidance and feedback from professional librarians who’ll help you grow in accuracy, patience, and knowledge. No experience is required — just a helpful attitude, adaptability, and a love of bringing knowledge to people where they are. This internship is perfect for someone interested in education, research, public service, or archival work. If you’re ready to help people find what they’re looking for — and maybe discover something unexpected — we’re ready to train you at the library.
