Description:

We’re hiring a Public Utility Worker to help keep city infrastructure clean, safe, and operational — perfect for someone who values hands-on work and community service. You’ll begin by assisting licensed utility technicians in inspecting water mains, sewer lines, valves, and hydrants throughout the city. You’ll be trained to operate landscaping equipment such as push mowers, string trimmers, blowers, and ride-on units. You’ll help maintain green spaces by trimming grass, watering plants, clearing brush, and spreading mulch as needed. You’ll be trained to use small equipment like leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers, and push mowers safely. You’ll help sweep debris from intersections, gutters, and construction zones using manual or mechanical tools. You’ll learn how to document service activity, collect water samples, and report pressure or quality issues accurately. You’ll support scheduled shut-offs or reconnections for water service and notify affected residents when necessary. You’ll rotate through landmark zones such as waterfront rails, civic monuments, observation points, or viewing decks.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Assist in troubleshooting electrical, water, or waste systems with senior technicians or supervisors.
  • Be physically prepared for demanding outdoor labor including lifting, digging, and climbing.
  • Report hazards, vandalism, or equipment malfunctions promptly for timely response.
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on public infrastructure such as water lines, sewer systems, or streetlights.
  • Uphold high standards of public trust by treating community infrastructure with care and respect.

Preferred:

  • Can interact respectfully with the public and answer basic questions about work being done.
  • Wants to grow into roles like Crew Leader, Equipment Operator, or Utility Supervisor.
  • Able to set up signs, barricades, or traffic cones to ensure a safe work area.
  • Comfortable lifting, digging, shoveling, and using hand or power tools for extended periods.
  • Able to operate vehicles such as utility trucks, sweepers, or light construction equipment safely and effectively.

Benefits:

  • You’ll make a tangible impact — keeping the lights on, water flowing, and gas available is a critical service.
  • Health, dental, and retirement benefits — we care about your health and future.
  • Safety is a priority — we provide the tools, training, and support to ensure you’re always working in a safe environment.
  • Competitive pay — your work in maintaining public utilities is well-compensated and valued.
  • Access to employee discounts — on services and products that support your personal and professional life.

You’ll follow safety protocols while working near water features, traffic edges, or high-foot-traffic areas. You’ll be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions and sometimes assist during weekends or overnight outages. You’ll work as part of a small crew where communication, reliability, and pride in your work are key. You’ll receive guidance on plant identification, irrigation systems, and how to report hazards like broken branches or flooding. You’ll receive guidance from senior staff and ongoing training in city procedures, equipment use, and safety practices. You’ll help track tasks completed, materials used, and areas serviced each day on digital or paper logs. No previous experience is required — just a strong work ethic, physical stamina, and a desire to keep your city clean and functional. If you’re ready to work where it counts — in the streets, parks, and spaces people use every day — we’re ready to welcome you to the team. If you’re ready to work below the surface to keep your city flowing, we’re ready to train you from the ground up.
