Description:

We’re hiring a Librarian Trainee to support our academic library team — ideal for someone who’s detail-oriented, tech-savvy, and passionate about learning in a higher education setting. You’ll begin by learning how to assist students and faculty in locating research materials, textbooks, and scholarly articles. You’ll be trained to navigate academic databases, digital catalogs, and citation tools like JSTOR, ProQuest, or EBSCOhost. You’ll be trained to answer common questions — from finding a specific author to locating quiet study areas or using the catalog. You’ll be trained to create colorful displays and book-themed bulletin boards that make the space inviting and engaging. You’ll assist with shelving returned materials, updating inventory, and maintaining the quiet, orderly atmosphere of the reading rooms. You’ll help set up academic displays that highlight new research, university achievements, or relevant resources by department. You’ll assist in logging children’s reading progress during seasonal programs like summer reading challenges. You’ll gain experience preparing library workshops on research skills, plagiarism avoidance, or citation management.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Support literacy development through storytime, tutoring, or educational outreach initiatives.
  • Recommend books and resources based on reader interests, age, or research topics.
  • Keep current with publishing trends, reference tools, and emerging technologies in information science.
  • Manage circulation activities such as checkouts, returns, renewals, and late fees.
  • Respond calmly and resourcefully to challenging situations, from tech issues to noise complaints.

Preferred:

  • Background or passion in education, literature, archives, or community engagement.
  • Values learning, inclusivity, and service in every interaction with patrons.
  • Open to working in academic, public, school, or special libraries depending on the role.
  • Enjoys connecting people with knowledge, information, and lifelong reading habits.
  • Comfortable supervising quiet study areas, assisting with printers/computers, or managing room bookings.

Benefits:

  • You’ll have time to think — not just react, rush, or multitask endlessly.
  • Help people find more than just books — sometimes it’s purpose, comfort, or curiosity.
  • Modern tools and software — no, it’s not all card catalogs anymore.
  • You’ll create programs that spark minds — from storytime to coding clubs.
  • Opportunities for professional development — webinars, courses, and conferences.

You’ll help handle outdoor conditions — from setting up tents or tables to managing space inside during bad weather. You’ll assist in mounting small exhibitions or displays, carefully choosing and presenting archival materials for public view. You’ll be mentored on how to work with accuracy, patience, and integrity when managing irreplaceable collections. You’ll participate in occasional conservation projects like rehousing fragile items or cleaning older volumes safely. You’ll receive training on copyright, citation, and reproduction procedures for archival materials. You’ll receive ongoing feedback to improve your communication, efficiency, and problem-solving skills. No experience is needed — just a steady hand, sharp eye, and deep respect for preserving the past. This internship is ideal for someone interested in museums, archival science, or historical research. If you’re ready to help students succeed behind the scenes, we’re ready to train you in the heart of the university library.
