Description:
We’re hiring a Public Utility Worker for night shifts focused on street and roadway maintenance — ideal for someone who’s dependable, alert, and comfortable working after hours to keep the city running. You’ll begin by assisting licensed utility technicians in inspecting water mains, sewer lines, valves, and hydrants throughout the city. You’ll be trained to use cones, warning signs, and reflective gear to secure work zones and direct nighttime drivers safely. You’ll help plant flowers, trees, and shrubs during seasonal projects, following planting plans and soil care standards. You’ll support watering schedules, fertilizing, and pest management using safe, approved methods. You’ll assist with checking water levels, replacing filters, and performing seasonal fountain startup or shutdown procedures. You’ll help identify and report hazards such as broken sidewalks, graffiti, or blocked drains to your supervisor or relevant departments. You’ll support seasonal work such as snow shoveling, salting walkways, or removing storm debris during weather events. You’ll be taught proper safety procedures for confined spaces, traffic areas, and exposure to untreated waste or water.
Basic Qualifications:
- Demonstrate accountability by following procedures and completing tasks thoroughly.
- Perform maintenance and repair work on public infrastructure such as water lines, sewer systems, or streetlights.
- Inspect utility systems regularly to identify wear, leaks, or potential hazards.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors and team members to stay aligned on tasks and priorities.
- Assist with installation or upgrades of pipes, meters, hydrants, or other public service components.
Preferred:
- Familiar with basic tools and equipment used for street, sewer, water, or facility maintenance tasks.
- Enjoys hands-on tasks that improve roads, parks, facilities, and essential infrastructure.
- Able to operate vehicles such as utility trucks, sweepers, or light construction equipment safely and effectively.
- Willing to support cleanup operations after storms, roadwork, or public gatherings.
- Able to set up signs, barricades, or traffic cones to ensure a safe work area.
Benefits:
- Opportunities for career advancement — move up into supervisory or specialized roles as you gain experience.
- A role that makes a real difference — you’ll be part of something that directly impacts people's lives.
- Paid time off and holidays — because your well-being matters too.
- Job stability in a critical sector — utilities are always needed, making your role indispensable.
- Clear expectations — you’ll always know what’s expected of you and how to meet performance goals.
You’ll assist in loading materials, fueling machines, and prepping trucks at the start and end of each shift. You’ll be expected to work early mornings, weekends, or holidays during park events, city cleanups, or public celebrations. You’ll assist with loading equipment, maintaining vehicles, and restocking fittings and repair materials after each job. You’ll be expected to work outdoors in various conditions, including heat, cold, and rain, with regular physical activity. You’ll receive guidance from senior staff and ongoing training in city procedures, equipment use, and safety practices. You’ll be mentored by senior team members and receive seasonal cross-training across multiple civic zones. No experience is required — just responsibility, physical readiness, and a strong desire to serve your community directly. This role is perfect for someone interested in essential work, municipal careers, or skilled utility operations. If you’re ready to care for the places where the city gathers, strolls, and rests — we’re ready to bring you onto the team.
