Description:

We’re hiring a Librarian Trainee to assist in the archives department — ideal for someone who appreciates history, structure, and preserving valuable information for future generations. You’ll begin by learning how to shelve books accurately using classification systems like Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress. You’ll learn how to set up temporary reading stations at schools, senior centers, rural stops, or community events. You’ll help set up and clean up after storytime sessions, puppet shows, or activity hours in the kids’ zone. You’ll help inventory boxes, sort through donations, and assess what should be preserved, stored, or restored. You’ll assist with shelving returned materials, updating inventory, and maintaining the quiet, orderly atmosphere of the reading rooms. You’ll learn how to read aloud with expression and clarity during read-along sessions or group storytelling. You’ll be shown how to redact sensitive information in public records and follow privacy policies for restricted collections. You’ll gain experience answering common questions from parents and teachers about literacy levels, educational resources, or program schedules.

Basic Qualifications:

• Assist with interlibrary loans and special orders to expand access for patrons.
• Support makerspaces, tech labs, or multimedia rooms if part of the facility's offering.
• Ensure that digital systems—catalogs, e-books, and learning portals—are accessible and functional.
• Plan and host educational programs, reading groups, or community events for all age groups.
• Promote library services both in person and online to broaden community engagement.

Preferred:

• Able to assist patrons with research, book searches, and accessing online resources or archives.
• Enjoys connecting people with knowledge, information, and lifelong reading habits.
• Familiar with library catalog software (e.g., Koha, Aleph, Sierra) and digital databases.
• Can collaborate with teachers, local organizations, or IT departments on education and outreach.
• Understands how to support information literacy, digital safety, and research skills among students or the public.
