Description:
We’re hiring a Public Utility Worker to help maintain public squares, promenades, and waterfront spaces — perfect for someone who enjoys open-air environments and takes pride in the beauty and order of shared spaces. You’ll assist in cleaning and maintaining fountains, seating areas, open pavilions, and paved walkways around public plazas and city centers. You’ll assist with removing litter, sweeping sidewalks, and emptying trash bins in public areas on a set schedule. You’ll be trained to operate tools like valve keys, hydrant wrenches, pressure gauges, and inspection cameras. You’ll assist with lane striping, reflector placement, and painting road markings under supervision of senior workers. You’ll help sweep debris from intersections, gutters, and construction zones using manual or mechanical tools. You’ll operate or assist with nighttime lighting equipment, generators, and power tools depending on task needs. You’ll be taught how to respond to urgent reports like fallen signage, sinkholes, or blocked storm drains quickly and safely. You’ll be taught proper safety procedures for confined spaces, traffic areas, and exposure to untreated waste or water.
Basic Qualifications:
- Maintain vehicles and tools by checking for wear, damage, and performing routine servicing.
- Respond to service requests and emergencies, including water main breaks or storm drain blockages.
- Ensure work zones are marked properly with signs, cones, or barriers to protect workers and the public.
- Follow safety protocols, wear protective gear, and comply with local regulations during all fieldwork.
- Uphold high standards of public trust by treating community infrastructure with care and respect.
Preferred:
- Experience performing maintenance, repair, or cleaning work in public works, utilities, or municipal services.
- Familiar with handling chemicals, paints, or cleaning agents in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Pays attention to the condition of city property and reports any hazards, damage, or repair needs.
- Follows directions from supervisors and reads site plans, blueprints, or instructions for job assignments.
- Willing to assist with emergency repairs, public events setup, or seasonal work like snow removal or landscaping.
Benefits:
- Recognition for your hard work — public utility workers are essential, and your contributions don’t go unnoticed.
- Consistent, reliable hours — predictable shifts, so you can plan your life around work.
- Work that’s both challenging and rewarding — you’ll solve problems and make a direct difference every day.
- Paid training and certifications — we invest in your professional growth and safety.
- Access to employee discounts — on services and products that support your personal and professional life.
You’ll support leaf collection, snow removal, and other seasonal tasks depending on weather and park needs. You’ll follow detailed work orders and document materials used, zones serviced, and any issues found during inspection. You’ll document routine inspections, cleanliness levels, and minor repairs performed throughout your route. You’ll interact courteously with the public and answer basic questions about services or scheduled activities. You’ll receive guidance from senior staff and ongoing training in city procedures, equipment use, and safety practices. You’ll help track tasks completed, materials used, and areas serviced each day on digital or paper logs. No prior experience is required — just dependability, physical energy, and a love for keeping nature accessible to all. This role is great for someone who values calm, rhythm, and helping create a clean space people can enjoy every day. If you’re ready to work below the surface to keep your city flowing, we’re ready to train you from the ground up.
