Description:

We’re hiring a Mail Carrier Trainee for rural routes — perfect for someone who’s responsible, enjoys quiet roads, and wants to bring dependable service to small communities. You’ll start by learning high-density city routes, using maps and GPS to navigate alleys, apartment blocks, and busy streets efficiently. You’ll assist in unloading postal trucks, scanning barcodes, and placing parcels onto conveyor systems or into sorting bins. You’ll help load mail into bags or vehicles, making sure fragile and high-priority items are placed properly. You’ll help customers with postage options, tracking questions, and mailing forms — always with a helpful attitude. You’ll learn how to operate basic sorting machinery and how to clear minor jams or reset bins during the shift. You’ll assist with organizing mail for different carrier routes, grouping by zip code, street, or delivery order. You’ll receive guidance on securing your bike, managing deliveries in bad weather, and staying visible and alert on the road. You’ll rotate between the front desk, sorting area, and storage room to understand the full scope of post office logistics.

Basic Qualifications:

• Sort and organize mail and packages for your delivery route before leaving the post office.
• Operate a mail truck, bicycle, or walk route safely while respecting traffic laws and weather conditions.
• Sort undeliverable mail and return it to the post office with proper documentation.
• Collect outgoing mail from homes and drop boxes, ensuring proper postage and handling.
• Ensure mail is delivered to the correct address with attention to names, unit numbers, and instructions.

Preferred:

• Comfortable carrying mailbags, walking long distances, and making frequent stops throughout the shift.
• Can quickly learn new routes or adjust to coverage areas when covering other carriers.
• Pays attention to mail delivery sequence and route planning for maximum efficiency.
• Familiar with scanning packages, updating tracking info, or recording delivery confirmations using handheld devices.
• Pays strong attention to addresses, unit numbers, and special delivery instructions.

You’ll receive training on what to do in case of a blocked entrance, a barking dog, or a delivery you can’t complete. You’ll help collect outgoing mail from public boxes or designated pickup points and return it to the post office on time. You’ll receive guidance on how to respond to lost items, wrong addresses, or special requests from elderly or remote residents. You’ll assist with closing duties such as counting till drawers, securing outbound mailbags, and locking storage areas. You’ll learn to work as part of a larger system — one where every label, scan, and bag makes the next delivery possible. You won’t be in the spotlight, but your work will move thousands of letters and packages before sunrise.
