Description:
We’re hiring a Librarian Trainee to join our mobile library team — ideal for someone who enjoys connecting with communities, traveling locally, and making books accessible to everyone. You’ll begin by learning how to organize and shelve children’s books, picture books, chapter books, and early readers by category and age group. You’ll be trained to navigate academic databases, digital catalogs, and citation tools like JSTOR, ProQuest, or EBSCOhost. You’ll be trained to answer common questions — from finding a specific author to locating quiet study areas or using the catalog. You’ll help process new arrivals by labeling, stamping, and preparing books, DVDs, and magazines for circulation. You’ll learn how to prepare materials for climate-controlled storage, using acid-free folders, boxes, and careful labeling. You’ll learn how to read aloud with expression and clarity during read-along sessions or group storytelling. You’ll assist in logging children’s reading progress during seasonal programs like summer reading challenges. You’ll gain experience maintaining a welcoming, flexible space in a small but functional mobile environment.
Basic Qualifications:
- Promote library services both in person and online to broaden community engagement.
- Organize, catalog, and maintain library collections using classification systems like Dewey or LOC.
- Manage circulation activities such as checkouts, returns, renewals, and late fees.
- Assist patrons in finding books, research materials, and digital resources tailored to their needs.
- Create displays and themed collections to highlight seasonal topics, cultural events, or local authors.
Preferred:
- Wants to grow into roles like Head Librarian, Archivist, Digital Resource Manager, or Library Director.
- Understands how to support information literacy, digital safety, and research skills among students or the public.
- Able to assist patrons with research, book searches, and accessing online resources or archives.
- Experience managing physical and digital collections, including acquisition, classification, and circulation of materials.
- Enjoys connecting people with knowledge, information, and lifelong reading habits.
Benefits:
- You’re not just organizing materials — you’re connecting people to what they need most.
- Get to know your regulars — the kid who loves dinosaurs, the elder who loves local history.
- You’ll be part of a place that still believes in community, curiosity, and kindness.
- Modern tools and software — no, it’s not all card catalogs anymore.
- Flexible hours that respect your brain’s rhythm — early bird or afternoon owl, we’ve got shifts.
You’ll gain exposure to both analog and digital preservation — from microfilm to cloud-based storage systems. You’ll assist with outreach by distributing flyers, answering questions, and introducing new patrons to library services. You’ll learn how to gently redirect noisy behavior and support a calm but fun environment. You’ll participate in occasional conservation projects like rehousing fragile items or cleaning older volumes safely. You’ll be mentored by youth librarians who will show you how to inspire a love of reading early in life. You’ll receive guidance and feedback from professional librarians who’ll help you grow in accuracy, patience, and knowledge. No experience is needed — just a love for learning, strong attention to detail, and a helpful attitude. This internship is ideal for someone interested in museums, archival science, or historical research. If you’re ready to help people find what they’re looking for — and maybe discover something unexpected — we’re ready to train you at the library.
